Rev. Dr.Mike Ovey (1958-2017)
The sudden death of our dear friend Mike Ovey has come as a great shock to many. As well as a good personal friend whom I shall greatly miss, Mike was also a great friend of BBtB, and during all the years of the event, which he loved, was our ‘resident theologian’, leading all the seminars that were too difficult or technical for the rest of us to handle! We all benefitted from the clarity of his mind, his ability to make difficult subjects become clear, and his wit and warmth of personality. Nobody could have been a more faithful, able or winsome defender of the historic Evangelical Gospel and authentic Biblical Christianity.
Internationally known and respected as a scholar, he will be a sad loss to Oak Hill Theological College, where he was principal, and to the international movement of faithful and biblical Anglicans (GAFCON) in which he was a significant influence. His address in Nairobi in 2013 was the highlight of the Conference.
His passion was the Gospel, which he loved and defended, and also a desire to see people properly trained to preach and teach that Gospel faithfully to a new generation. A whole generation of students and ordinands have reason to thank God for the high standards he set and exemplified, combined with the personal love and pastoral care he showed for those whom he taught.
Do please pray for his wife Heather and the children especially at this sad time of loss for them. Also for Oak Hill as a community in shock, and as in time they begin to seek a new leader.
It is times like these that the sure hope of the Gospel to those who believe it brings comfort, hope and even joy despite the tears of loss. He is with Christ which is ‘better by far’, but he will be sorely missed.
